ASARCO is amongst the United States’ top mining companies, producing lead, copper, various minerals, metal alloys and a variety of precious metals such as gold and silver.

In 2009, shortly after filing Chapter 11, ASARCO and its parent company Grupo Mexico established an asbestos trust fund totaling $750 million dollars. It’s said that the trust was established to handle more than 95,000 asbestos lawsuits.

ASARCO operated numerous mines and the company had a number of subsidiary ventures as well,

which were reportedly involved in asbestos mining operations.

A natural mineral, asbestos must be mined and it was these mining operations that apparently led to asbestos exposure and subsequent asbestos diseases such as mesothelioma, asbestosis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and beyond.

How Did ASARCO Expose People to Asbestos?

ASARCO, LLC allegedly exposed employees to asbestos during its mining operations through its subsidiaries, primarily the Cement Asbestos Products Company or CAPCO Pipe Company, Inc. and Lac d’Amiante du Quebec Ltd., also known as Lake Asbestos of Quebec, Ltd. Or LAQ Canada, Ltd.

These subsidiaries reportedly mined asbestos and made asbestos products, such as pipes.

ASARCO, LLC was established in 1899 under the name American Smelting and Refining Company. The company’s establishment was marked by the merger of a number of mines in Colorado, Arizona and other areas of the southwestern United States and in Mexico.

The company continued to grow and expand after it was first established in 1899, acquiring additional mines in North America, South America and Latin America. The company’s name was shortened from American Smelting and Refining Company to ASARCO in 1975. It was ultimately purchased by Grupo Mexico in 1999 for a sum of approximately $1.2 billion dollars. But by 2005, the company filed for bankruptcy as a result of the many mesothelioma and asbestos lawsuits. It in 2009 when the ASARCO asbestos trust fund was established as part of the company’s bankruptcy plan.

One of the major operations that have been associated with ASARCO asbestos exposure involved one of the planet’s largest open pit asbestos mines, which was reportedly established and operated by ASARCO subsidiary called Lake Asbestos of Quebec. The operation involved draining the two mile long Black Lake and turning it into an asbestos mine.

This $32.5 million dollar asbestos mining operation is said to have produced approximately 100,000 tons of asbestos annually, accounting for about 7% of the world’s asbestos supply.

As with any mining operation, dust is generated and in the case of ASARCO’s asbestos mining, this led to asbestos exposure as workers inhaled raw asbestos fibers. It’s believed that a significant number of the asbestos mining exposure incidents involved workers with the ASARCO subsidiary, Lake Asbestos of Quebec.

It’s said that most of the asbestos exposure cases involving ASARCO asbestos mines occurred up until the late 1980s, when that particular mining operation ceased.

The Cement Asbestos Products Company or CAPCO Pipe Company reportedly manufactured cement pipes which included asbestos components.

Who’s Eligible for Asbestos Compensation from the ASARCO Trust Fund?

The ASARCO asbestos trust fund settles asbestos and mesothelioma claims for a number of different individuals, including:

  • Employees who worked for the Cement Asbestos Products Company, also known as the CAPCO Pipe Company, Inc., including assembly line staff, supervisors, storeroom employees, transport staff and others.
